What price hath Aesthetics?

For better or worse, humanity is divided up in groups that live in hovels, mansions, on boats, in apartments, in single family, multi family, in brownstones, in condos, under bridges, etc. I read an article from the NY Times about a group of folks in Joshua Tree that live in homes they build out of whatever they can find, and some of them are works of art. Really interesting stuff. The pics below are from Randy Polumbo's place.

I guess if there's a will there's a way, if there's a buck there's a market, and if there's enough folks for a vote then some people are going to be out voted. I guess what I'm saying is that if someone wants to go blow a zillion dollars on a mansion, that's their choice. If someone wants to build a place like Randy's, they can. Inexpensively, too. With high style. But I think the Randy Polumbo type of homes have only found a niche out in the boonies, so to speak, and for no other reasons than it's more culturally accepted out there, and that he has no neighbors or associations crawling up his butt about their concept of aesthetics.

Also, did anyone see that article about the folks building a house inside of a mine? I have to look for that. But it wasn't on the "just for shelter" end of the spectrum. It looked expensive.

How about a former missile base as a home?

"...neighbors or associations crawling up his butt about their concept of aesthetics." I think that just about says it all.

You what stinks about that idea? I bet you a sandwich some Russian military bureaucrat never updated his target list, and there are still nukes pointed at them.

I wonder if the home inspector will catch that.

Yeah...I think if it comes to that it won't really matter
On the plus side you might be the only one in the area to survive

Hope the times find you and yours doing well.
As per our conversation on aesthetics and square footage in housing, has the last two years made much of a difference?
Was I correct in my predictions of smaller more practical homes?
Or did it go straight to no homes?
