what is this "feature" in my ceiling?

And here it is with the speaker removed. As a point of interest, one of those wires, the ones connected to the speaker leads, runs to a switch by the bed.

My guess is they are used to living in a downstairs apartment and thought the place was too quiet, so they put a looped recording of footsteps and people yelling to feel more at home.

Had the photo in Post #15 been the photo used in Post #1 we could have saved all of this speculation and waste of time on everyone's part. The photo in Post #15 clearly shows a speaker. So was the photo used in Post #1 used intentionally to deceive us all?
