what is this "feature" in my ceiling?

so I moved into my current house a year ago and I noticed that there is this "feature" and I can't figure out what is is for, any ideas? I thought perhaps it was for ventilation but there is a room right above it. The house is circa 1959 if that helps.

Oh, and for description of the photo, thats me looking up at the ceiling, the bigger part is in the bedroom while the other part is in the closet.

Just trying to figure it out so I know how to treat it or if it serves a purpose.

Thanks for the help!

Do you have ductwork in the house? Could be a supply or return.
Whole house fan?

If you can get in your attic you may be able to see what it is.

Looks like an old attic access. Perhaps there was a renovation where the wall was added and secodn floor if there is a room above it.

looks way too small for that. What is the black sections. is it solid or is it ducted? the larger, trimed out part almost looks like there is 6" or 4" round vent/duct in it, but really hard to tell from picts

Where are you, what part of the country? Texas?

Looks like a cold air return with the diffuser that can be seen. But in a closet?

I live in Maryland and the room above it is not an addition. I'll get measurements later tonight.

Waaaaaayyyyyy back, they put holes thru the ceiling into the floor upstairs for heat to go up thru to heat the upstairs. Usually there will be a grate of some kind on the floor above.

That is exactly what that looks like it was, a heat exchange - they just blocked it off over the years.
Growing up we had one going from living room to master bedroom upstairs
From hallway into second bedroom upstairs
From dining room to upstairs hallway.

Other then those 3 items there was no other heating source in the upstairs.
