Default what to do with old vynal siding

I am currently re-siding my house that has viynal siding on it. My question is, should I leave it on as a sort of vapor barrier and put my new hardi board over it? or Should I tear it off, toss it in the dump and create more trash in the world.

Default vynal siding

Redline,
Thanks for the reply. I think it will be easier to side the house without having to go over the old Vynal

Save it until 'Earth Day' and burn it in a large pile. It makes lots and lots of thick black smoke.

Take it off you will be left with more options. Like wrapping the house(tyvek) if it currently isn't. I think hardi is a excellent cement board lap siding. Would recomend getting it prepainted from manufacturer they give i think 15 year warrant on paint. Also going with matching caulk. Don't forget matching caulk.

i don't know what to do with the old vinyl, hire a dumpster. BUT you MUST remove it if you want to put Hardie Board on and do it correctly. It will also give you a chance to Tyvek wrap etc as others have correctly pointed out.

FWIW - Vinyl siding is hardly a 'true vapor barrier'.

Pieter,

If you plan on residing with Hardi board siding....or really any other kind of siding, the advice would be the same: RIP it all off.

Before you start any kind of re-siding-install. Please do your research on proper house sheathing/weather prep....

Also, before you start residing with Hardi-board siding...again, please do your research on: installation/cutting/dust/health measures...etc...

Good luck...
