What to do with fireplace insert doors?

Hi, am new to this forum and have a remodel dilemma. Am hiring a contractor to rehab a 1980s house in WA state. The house has a woodburning fireplace insert. However, the outside plate (is that what you call it?) is ugly and the bifold doors don't swing out properly. we want to update the look to modern, but the only solution we've been offered by fireplace companies is to replace the entire insert for $1,500-up. Is there an alternative solution? The outer frame does not seem removable from the rest of the insert. Are there people who can fix the metal doors? Repaint the brass color to jet black?

No picture came up.
If it's an insert then not sure why you would even want a screen.
It would defeat the whole reason for having insert on any I've seen.
