we are extending our driveay but we have observed that a portion of the area is spongy, what can be done to fix the sponginess before we asphalt it

The first step is to find out the cause such as a leaking drain etc.

Spongy ground is often an indication of usuitable soil underneath, such as organic material, saturated loose silt, debris, or a stump pile. You need to dig up the unsuitable soil (if that is the problem) and replace it with suitable material, which consists of crushed stone, coarse sand, or sand/aggregate mix, placed and compacted.

Dig out the bad fill as Dan stated, and typically we would replace with dry, absorbant base material like crushed concrete or fractured limestone. Both are readily available here and soak up alot of moisture before becoming unstable.
