Waterproofing New Construction Windows In Old Siding

I have a 1950's one story ranch house that I am slowly remodeling room by room. I have been replacing the windows as I go with new construction vinyl windows from Pella. The outside of the house is board and batten siding and there is tar paper underneath that. I plan on putting up vinyl siding next year and want to know how to temporarily waterproof the windows until that time. I did not pull off the siding and integrate the nailing flanges with the tar paper. I screwed the widow nail flanges to the outside of the board siding and taped with "Protecto-Wrap". I also added a bead of roofing cement on the top edge of the tape on the flange on top of the window. Will this waterproof the windows until next year when I do the siding? I dont plan on removing the wood that is there. Also, how do I waterproof the windows permanently before the vinyl goes on? I don't think that I can put any tyvek or typar on due to there being tar paper underneath. Thanks again for the help.

I,m not sure what you mean by waterproofing the windows. Sounds like you are asking about flashing the window to keep water from getting behind the nailing flange. If this is the case, that will be done when the siding is installed. As for what you have done so far, only time and weather will tell.

Yes flashing is what I meant....sorry about that. It only has to hold up for a year. But once I am ready to put the vinyl siding on, what do I need to do to properly flash the windows to prevent water intrusion?

It would help allot if you could post pictures of what one of the windows looks like from the outside. Be sure to get a closeup of the sill in one shot. Most of the time when siding is added, the window trim is wrapped with aluminum. This generally covers all of the exposed wood and the installer should take care of any needed flashing at that time. Depending on the situation, silicone caulking can be added where the aluminum meets the vinyl windows. Caulking is often applied around the outside edge of the window when it is installed, but the method can be different for new construction and replacement windows, thus a picture would be helpful.

I'm afraid I can't sufficently describe that in writing. I would try to find something on you tube or maybe a siding company website. I can tell you that when flashing you should look at the wall as if water was running down it. Flashing at the top overlapping the sides overlapping the bottom.
