wall framing

is there a disadvantage of attaching the exterior wall studs directly to the sill plate,as opposed to framing on top of the subfloor?

Rim joist is better anchor for plywood to act as anti racking member. Rim joists is ready made blocking for joists from twisting. 8' wall with 8' studs are standard and less waste of wood.

the height of standard studs will be an issue as well, you will be 3/4" short if building off of the framed floor system. for whatever reason when not wanting the whole sub floor put down- on some walls we have ripped 3/4" sub floor to 3 1/2" and put it down before putting up the wall. this requires blocking added into the floor system to catch the new sub floor that butts to the wall afterwards...
