Vinyl windows and brick molding
We are in the process of building a new house that will have vinyl windows and steel siding. I was discussing the methods of finishing around the windows with the builder and the normal way is to cover the nailing flange with the J channel and siding. If the window would ever have to be replaced, the siding would have to come down first. He said that if I'm that concerned about future maintenance then vinyl brick molding or something similar could be used to cover the nailing flange with the J channel against this but of course it would increase the construction costs. Am I being over concerned about this?

The vinyl brickmold sounds like a good way to go. Steel siding would be tough to cut out to change out the windows. And let's face it, twenty years down the road, you may be changing some out.

most new construction vinyl window are available with a snap on exterior trim in different styles and colors

So this "snap-on" trim covers the nailing flange? Removing the trim would allow access so the window could be replaced if needed?
