Vinyl Siding Question

I hired a fellow to replace some vinyl siding that showed premature weathering (discoloration). on a two story house The company replaced the siding (10 square) and allowed $100/sq labor for replacement. The contractor agreed the $100/sq. would be acceptable. I disposed of the old siding.

After removing the old siding, I noticed that the J channel was OK but 6 inside and 6 outside corners looked bad and needed also to be replaced. Being that all the siding was off, no additional effort was required other than removing and replacing the dozen corners.I purchased the corners myself.

What the contractor added to the bill was excessive I thought but I want to be fair. What would be a reasonable amount of labor/hrs to add to the bill to replace these dozen corners

Vinyl Siding Question

did you purchased all pieces cut to proper length ? and did they level them self? IMO that is additional effort.

Vinyl Siding Question

Good point. I would make an educated guess that 4, maybe 5 of the corners needed to be cut to length.

Vinyl Siding Question

I don't know how this guy bases his rates, but we charge by the square and this includes all trim. I suppose if he had some trouble fitting the corners, maybe time by the hour would be fair.

Vinyl Siding Question

No trouble with the corners, pretty straightforward as I watched him do them. I am trying to determine what would be a reasonable number of man hrs for 6 lenghth of inside and 6 length of outside corner peices.

Vinyl Siding Question

You could call a few installers for a general price per square, including trim, and then ask your installer if these guys are right, or is he? It really sounds like he was pumping the job for more bucks. You never said total time on the job?

That's kindof the impression I was getting. If it were you ,how many man hrs would you have charged for this scenario?

You say that you watched him do the corners - How long did it take him to do the corners?

Vinyl Siding Question

To be honest I wasn't paying that close of attention to the time involved per corner. I probably should have.

Vinyl Siding Question

Were all the corners going up two stories or just one story?

Vinyl Siding Question

Well, I just cut him a check for 10/man hrs worth of labor for installing the 7 outsides and 5 inside corners. That stikes me as more than fair........ comments

Vinyl Siding Question

So you basically are saying it took him 2 days, 1 day for siding, 1 day from the corners? Of course, I can't see your job, but a comparable job here would have been 1 day for 10 sq + trim...$1000 would have been more then fair, IMO.

Actually it took him 2.5 days, he wasn't trying to bust any speed records though.
