Vinyl siding over wood siding
My house is curently covered in wood siding. What steps do I need to take in order to convert to vinyl siding? can the vinyl go over the wood siding or do I have to take the wood siding down before doing the siding.

side over it. you can nail 1/4" foam over it and hang the siding.

guys that only hang vinyl do it all the time, but they dont get paid to find and fix any existing problems with the house such as leaks and rot in the existing windows or sheathing. if you do strip it down you can correct any problems before you put new siding on

They may have to build out around any windows and doors and cover with coil stock before the siding goes up. If there not they will look recessed.
It's better to do it anyway or your still going to have to paint the exposed wood.
The only time I would suggest removing the old is if there's no insulation in the walls, the house needs to be rewired, or a lot of rotted or insect eatten wood.

I agree it is better but most customers do not want to spend the extra money to do it right.

It's not always "right" to remove it. If there's damages, etc. then maybe, but otherwise it's a waste of time/money.
It's like saying you have to remove a single layer of roof shingles to re-roof. If it's damaged, yes, if not, no...just wasting $$

Vinyl siding over wood siding
i would say..in general.. it actually takes a more practiced hand to do a proper, good looking, durable overlay
alot depend on what your going over and it's exposure, thin foam underlayments are not easy to keep ''flat'' to the wall and over time can actually sag between the old sidings exposure bringing the siding with it
then there is the issue of longer nails with mostly foam around the shanks that can also sag, remember we hang vinyl siding not nail it to the wall
thicker foam can help but tends to really recess trim and cause issues with gable ends that have no overhang
added to the fact that the thicker foams are not cheap either can put removal in a more favorable light

are overlays even legal anymore via insurance companys.. their more prone to leaks and all the extra weight on the roof.. its just stupid to intall another layer of shingles over old
as for stripping off homes to side em.. we dont give the option to go over the old. especially for new wood or fibre cement siding as it will void the warrenty. most houses we do need a new roof anyway so we resheath the roof in the process and create proper overhangs. i think ive only sided over old wood twice and both times it was a total pain in teh butt trying to get siding to sit correctly and have straight corner posts
i have several photos of homes we do in my photo album,

What's adding siding over old wooden siding got to do with the weight of the roof?
He's going with vinyl siding not Hardee.
Please show me a siding company that will not warrenty there siding if it's installed over fan fold and old wooden siding. I'd like to see that.

I vote for tear off.
I've seen plenty of times where what appeared to be a perfectly sound house with wood siding that actually had issues behind it.
Water getting between the wrb and the sheathing causing havoc but showing no signs of it by just looking at the siding.
The fact is "nobody" can just look at the siding and "guarantee" everything’s fine behind it.
