Vinyl siding over old 12" lapboard siding

I have an old garage with peeling & rotting 12" lapboard siding. Can I install the new vinyl siding directly over the lapboaed siding after I wrap the building in Tivex & replace the rotting lapboard peices? There is room on all the window & door trim (3" wide) to install the "J chanel" as to hold the vinyl inplace. The old lapboard siding is only a 1/4" thick. I just don't want the vinyl siding to look wavey vertically.

what the quot are you talking about?but no you have to install an underlayment to flatten the wall
