Vinyl siding over limestone brick/mortar?

Hi Everyone,

I have an old house (1920) with limestone brick/mortar that is deteriorating. The mortar can be scraped away a little painfully by finger, and the brick are soft and somewhat flaky, especially in the areas that were previously painted. The house gets bitterly cold in the winter and I would like to insulate it from the outside as well as stop the deterioration of the exterior walls.

I know that the best thing to do would be to have the house repointed, but unfortunately that is way beyond my budget.

Would vinyl siding with 1in foam insulation protect the brick/mortar from further deteriorating?

Being that the condition of the brick/mortar is somewhat compromised what would be the best way to attach siding to the walls?

Thank you for any other suggestions, answers, or other factors that I haven't thought about.

Vinyl siding over limestone brick/mortar?

whats behind the brick? wood sheathing? concrete block? putting siding over brick results in some pretty cheesy details you'd be better off removing the deteriorated brick veneer and starting over with the siding of your choice

On the other side of the brick is the interior plaster wall.

I don't understand your statement about veneer. Could you explain?

Also, what kind of cheesy details are you talking about?

Thanks,

K

Vinyl siding over limestone brick/mortar?

yes, limestone brick and mortar on the exterior, plaster walls on the inside. Along one side of the house, upstairs, studs were put in and sheetrock was hung when the the house was renovated in the 80's. But most of the house is plaster on brick.

This house was built ca 1920.
