Vinyl siding over cedar shakes?

Hi .... My husband and I are in the process of getting estimates on having our home resided. It is a rancher that was built in the 50's on a concrete slab. Some of the contractors that are coming out to estimate are suggesting that we have the cedar shakes removed then have 3/8" foam board installed and then vinyl siding. Others are saying they can place the vinyl directly over the cedar.
Can anyone give me an honest answer as to what the correct way of doing this is please?

Vinyl siding over cedar shakes?

The house is 60 years old I would want to see the condition of the sheathing before covering it up. You also end up recessing the windows due to the added thickness. Unless the flashing is done correctly, water can be funneled behind the new siding.
Both scenarios are done all the time. Most people cover it,due to the extra cost involved.
