vinyl siding over aluminum siding

Hi. I have been looking at some mobile homes in a real nice country park. I can across a few I really liked, but one seems odd to me...they had their vinyl sidings installed on top of the old aluminum siding. The maintenance man for the park did it in his spare time. Why in the world would someone install vinyl over aluminum (besides laziness)? Is there some kind of benefit I am unaware of? Also, seems to me this would not be a good idea...am I right? Please help me understand :-) Thanks

your right its not a recomended procedure

Stupidity? Lack of knowledge in the transition? Could be that the siding is part of the structure.

does anyone know why its not recomended, when its ok for other siding types?:)

Because as previously mentioned the aluminum is also the sheathing on most mobiles and not a suitable nailing surface for anything. :confused1:

:yes:yea but besides that, these sidings have internal drainage systems, that are disrupted when nails are driven thru it,which can actually cause water to become trapped in the underlaying siding

:eek:Driving a nail through the aluminum will make a weep hole not weep, or water not to drain out of the bottom of the panel?

Tom Struble 11-02-2010 11:27 PM

 point is your disrupting the built in drainage system of the underlaying siding, you don't know what your doing when you drive nails thru it
