My garage is about 50 yrs old and has no sheathing just 1 by 4 cross bracing with roofing felt attached which is really deteriorating. The previous owner put up vinyl siding over wood siding which to me was not smart. Lately I have noticed some water getting under the vinyl past the wood siding and through the felt. I plan to remove the vinyl and wood siding from that area and put up sheathing with house wrap and put the vinyl back up. Do you think a drip edge type of flashing is smart under the bottom course of vinyl siding?
Got to have a picture.
Siding over old wooden siding is done all the time with no issues.
Only place I can see it leaking is if the slab was pored to low and it's coming in under the wall.
Yes slab was poured too low and the wall foundation was not brought up high enough. I can see some drips about halfway up the wall from behind the felt and yes there is some water getting in under the wall. Should I seal the wall issue on the outside with sealant or a flashing? As far as the drips from above what do you think about my suggestion from the previous post?
Not sure how anyone here can tell you why a sided wall can leak in the middle, the best way to keep the bottom from leaking, what measures to take to prevent future damage without seeing it.
All you will end up with is a bunch of guesses and more questions without a picture.
Any pics hard to envision. Is there an overhang, exposed rafter tails. Old school roofing and siding used to be put up that way with bridging ( or 1x4) for cedar shakes do there was somewhere to nail
Yes there is an overhang of about 6 inches or so, not much. What do you think of my suggestion in regards to fixing the issue? Also, do you suggest a drip edge under the bottom course of vinyl siding so water does not get under the wall and into the garage?
Yes for the bottom try putting apiece of 1/4 in azek (or similar material) so that it goes past the slab and also past the vinyl(prefererably under tar paper too) then put the tac strip for siding back where it was mow on that piece of azek. For the top use piece of 5/4 azek(or similar material) butg it up to top most point of wall int roof with the bottom inside corner dadoed so the siding goes under it. Hope u can understand and I hope it helps
i think he means to have the azec to act as something that will cover both the wall sheathing and the joint in the foundation.. then the drip edge or flashing sits on that.. its a common detail and gives a bit of a shadow line.. as long as the azec is set into a bead of caulking , shouldnt be any issue
there is no sheathing. It is old style 2x4s with 1 by 4 cross bracing. The roofing felt underneath is in bad shape. Its been up there for for years so falling apart. After putting on a drip edge would you just nail up your starter strip on top of the lip of the drip edge?
