Vinyl Siding Estimate

TWO QUESTIONS
I'm in the process of pricing for VINYL SIDING.

1) Does anyone have any pros/cons for the Crane "Core" Siding - which is standard siding & lined with styrofoam-type of insulation. It is 20% more than the standard siding.

2) Currently there is asbestos slate siding & the installer states that the vinyl can be installed over it. Pros/cons?

Many thanks for the help.

Crane, siding is a great product.

Get them to remove the existing siding, I know that he wants to install it over it, because it will save money but you really should rip it off.

The only problem with removing the asbestos siding is that it will triple the cost of the job.

i install siding here in florida, but am not familiar with crane.

however, insulated siding definitely lays up better than non, not to mention it is more resisant to damage especialy in colder climates.
with the added insulative value a 20% premium is pretty reasonable.

we almost always leave the asbestos siding on around here as long as the underlying structure is sound. if there is any wood damage underneath it can make for an awful job since the asbestos will crack and break easily

There is really no additional insulation value. It is just a sales gimmick. The insulation may stiffen the siding, but it does not provide any insulation.

The siding is just hanging there and air can get up, under and around the insulated siding. If is nothing more than a baffle.

I live in Eastern Washington it does not get real cold here. Maybe a few days or more in the teens in the winter. OK maybe once in a while for a week or two I have never seen anybody use this so called insulated siding. The foam ( in my opinion) is just their to help hold the sidings shape in extreme installation problems when the walls are so bad you need it. In these cases the walls should be stripped or fixed or something not just covered up.
