Vinyl Shake Siding over Bat and Board Cedar

We live in Connecticut and we're just in the beginning phases of deciding how best to vinyl side our house. It currently has cedar bat and board siding. Is it necessary to remove the bats before installing vinyl siding or can a foam board of sorts be installed between the bats. We're getting alot of conflicting opinions.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Vinyl Shake Siding over Bat and Board Cedar

I would remove the bats, install 30lb ASTM felt then your insulation (optional). I’m sure there’s many who will disagree.
