Vermiculite Insulation
Hi - just had an inspection done on a house today and the inspector found Vermiculite insulation poured in the attic that was not mentioned in the Truth in Housing along with the fiberglass also present. I've read up on the stuff and personally, I don't want to bother with it....and may not purchase the home as a result. Furthermore, the inspector, walked around in the attic (on the boards designated for walking - not the insulation) and came back down with dust on his clothes. I wanted to run out of the place! :furious:

Am I over-reacting???????

Never knew vermiculite was thought to be contaminated with asbestos, but it is:
If you can, I wouldn't buy the property after reading that document.

vermiculite may have asbestos in it, but not necessarily. As a rule and by code the process to deal with it is to not remove it, but to encapsulate it. However this may be difficult to do. If you do not need air sealing or more insulation there is not safety concern to leave it as is.

Ayuh,... Sure are....Fiberglass isn't an issue,+ the percentage of Bad vermiculite is miniscule...

I agree with Bob. Not all vermiculite has asbestos. Have it tested before considering walking away.
