venting range hood out

I am about to install a chimney style range hood. I can vent out with a little extra effort (have to cut a stud out and vinyl siding.) Does it make a big difference to vent out versus non-ducted?

It makes a big difference. One is functional, one just makes noise.

Like Ron says, one has function, the other is just a marketing term to sell you something that has absolutely no purpose.

What would be your reaction if I suggested that you install a recirculating vent van in the toilet compartment of your bath room:eek:? So why would you just want to recirculate kitchen smoke and odors?

They are both right, but what are you going to do about the stud you are about to kill? It is not there for aesthetics. Can't you elbow the vent to miss the stud?

Not enough room inside the 9 3/4" chimney hood (stud is almost cetered). I can make it if I reduce 6" duct to a 4" duct, (I have to reduce in middle of duct as it is 6" coming out of hood)...how does this sound??

Cut the stud and put a header in on top and a filler piece on the bottom.

You're kidding aren't you? You're saying that cutting the sheetrock and framing the opening is too much trouble?
Is it the enormous cost of the sheet goods or is it just too much effort?
Ron
