Vapor barrier in multi-layered wall
I have been receiving different advice about where to replace a vapor barrier in a multi-layered wall.
I have a cottage in a cold climate, and because of an outside leak had to do a major repair of the outside wall and structural members. The composition of the wall (outside to inside) is: vinyl siding, chipboard, R20 insulation, chip board, plywood layer (recommended by an engineer to enhance strength of wall), drywall. Existing vapor barrier had been placed on inner chipboard (between chipboard and drywall). While this is on the "warm side" it is not directly atop insulation. Is this acceptable (the vapor barrier is just below the drywall as in more typical outside walls), or should it be next to the insulation, on the inner side (also as is typical of the usual outside wall)?
Any advice with an explanation would be most appreciated!
