Using slate in a shower

I've got the Kerdi up (what a job that was).

Dh wants to get slate from HD to put in the shower. I've been doing a lot of reading and have mixed reactions about using it in the shower. There is a 2x2 mosaic for the floor that goes with the slate so the 12x12" tiles will only be on the walls.

Is there a way I can know for certain that this slate won't turn to mud without putting it in a bucket and waiting? I know 2 people locally that have used it in their showers, one is new the other over a year old.

If I use the slate, should I seal it before grouting and what would be the best sealer/enhancer to use?

Thanks.

Sandy

Using slate in a shower

I did a slate shower in my house a year ago. See pics here:
My bathroom remodel

It is beautiful, but I wouldn't do it again. I used a very high dollar wet-look sealer/enhancer and sealed the heck out of it. I've found it incredibly difficult to clean and the mineral staining from the water is really ruining the shower. No matter how hard I scrub it looks like crud. As nice as it used to look, I really regret doing it. Some of my slate tiles are flaking off, and one has spalled off so bad it needs to be replaced. I was warned by Bud Cline here on this forum that it might not be a good long-term product but I opted to not take his sage advice.

It was the hardest tile job I've ever done as well due to the inconsistencies in the tiles' thickness and dimensions.

Do yourself a favor and reconsider.
