Understair cupboard

Hi there I'm hoping to be able to put z cupboard in under my stairs. There is currently a wall either side of stairs. Stairs run straight, through middle of house. One side of stairs, the wall runs from floor straight to ceiling upstairs. The other side of stairs only partial way up as has bannister upstairs now this is the side where I wish to knock a 'hole' out to make a cupboard. Would I need to put some kind of support in? It is a brick wall
