ugly attic hatch

Hello and welcome Kevin, to the best darn DIY'r site on the web.

You could always move it to ether side, fillin the openning with drywall, its undoubtedly in the middle as this would have been the best place to land between vehicles.

I'd tell the Mrs that you held a poll and every member here was adamant that
the ONLY solution was to mount a 36" x 51" flat screen up there.

It also could be in the middle because of access height once you are in the attic.
