Type of nails for exterior trim

The siding looks like this.

The cedar trim is placed 16" oc. The siding is just 8x4 sheets of plywood type wood. The trim is just used to cover the seams and nails. Can I use 2" galvanized finish nails? I do have 2 1/2" galvanized ring shank nails. It was originally fastened with spiral nails.

8d ring shank galvanized nails should be used to fasten the sheets of siding to the studs. That's a code requirement. The same 8d's will suffice for fastening the cedar 1x as well.

Yeah, I knew about the siding. I wasn't sure if I could get by with the trim boards. The nails in the trim become visible after a few years.
