Type of Footing?

I recently saw a project in which 7 storey building is being build..One thing which came to my mind when i saw the design was that it was being build with some strange kind of footing..

The right portion of the building was where the machines etc where to be placed...so i think the load is really large...soil at that site is also kind of clayey so there is some prob with seepage...the designer has said to provide a pile foundation, this decision has raised a lot of questions...I personally feel that the raft is the best solution but i dont know why the hell is the structural engineer insisting on piles..

Any suggestions?

There are several reasons for the pilingg -

1. Clay with seepage is can be very, very weak. Most clays do really not have high strengths. - They just look strong in the short term, but can have high settlement.

2. The soil boring tells about the lower levels of soil and the water tablle. Heavy loads rely on th lower soild, not just what you see.

3. If you have machines, you can have vibrations that require better foundations.

4. Cost

5. Education and a few years of experience.

Type of Footing?

It may also be because of a difference in surface soil types on the site.
