Type of cement
I'm making my basement useable. So I moved all the mechanicals into a corner and have partioned them off using a frame/drywall wall. I had my plumber install a floor drain near the mechanicals. The old floor drain is in the middle of the basement so I want to
1) fill in the old drain
2) level off the area around the old drain
3) Create a curb around the partion to prevent any possible flooding and do some floor masonry to have the floor near the mechanicals slope toward the new drain

I'm trying to do research and will be going to the library soon. Can anyone recommend any good places on the internet or materials/advice on this project? Or even a complete step by step and materials list. That would be awesome.

I plan on putting tile over this area. The area where the old drain is probably 4 feet by 4 feet. Other parts of the basement have minor cracks should I fill these cracks in and level the area too?

First thing--Concrete is what you want--not cement---To fill in a concrete floor regular Sackcrete
mix is fine---compact the gravel---add a poly sheet for a vapor barrier and go to it.

If you are tiling---do not over fill the area and give yourself a high spot---

Post a picture of the cracks---of they are flush (both sides the same height) you should be O.K. to tile.
If they are heaved up tell us--You may need an isolation membrane to make the installation safe---

If you wanted a curb around your utility room, you should have built, then put the partition walls on it.

Your curb will not stop water.

Elevate the stuff you want to keep dry. Put your furnace and water heater on concrete blocks.
