Tying area drain into foundation drain. Bad ideal?
I have a 8 foot retaining wall that ties into the house’s basement on one end and to an outside stairwell at the other end. The wall sits at a 3-4 foot negative grade to the yard. Instead of taking off many dump truck loads of soil I was looking to install an area drain about 10-20 feet out front the bite of the 90 degree angle made from the stair well as it intersects the retaining wall. The house and retaining wall have a foundation drain installed. My question is would it be OK to hook the area drain discharge into the foundation drain?
I personally think it's terrible idea, especially if the foundation drain leads to a sump pump. In a heavy storm with a power outage, the surface drain is going to put an un-needed load on the foundation.........
I thought this to be a bad ideal, just needed to bounce it off a few folks. Now how to redirect the area discharge. I either could drill a hole in the retaining wall or make the discharge run up hill ???
