turning a fence section into a gate

im looking to replace a section of my fence and turn it into a gate.
i want the gate to be sturdy and not flimsy when it opens and closes.

my current fence is the stockade type of wood fence so im gonna keep with that type of fence to keep it all the same style.

i was thinking of putting 1x2's runing vertically on the end of fence section and screwing them into the horizontal cross pieces to make a frame and then 1 diagonal piece at the top and 1 at the bottom to help assure its sturdy.

im looking for opinions on if you think this will make it sturdy
or maybe some other easier/better way to do this?

You dont say what width or height the gate is to be.
In any event, 2x1 seems a bit flimsy.

I have tried that a number of times with little success. The large problem is sag. The fence section tend to distort diagonally even when I tried to brace it. The only method I found that worked over the long term was to place a wheel at the far end to support the far corner of the fence. The other method I used was a heavy duty metal farm gate and then attached wood fence boards to it. The boards did nothing other than hide the fact I was using a metal farm gate.

the gate would be 6 ft high and 5 wd.
i was just thinking maybe using 2x4 on the hinge side and 2x1 on the opposite side and diagonal would be better?
