Turn tub wall into shower wall

I have a house with a bathtub and no shower. The bathtub is in the corner with the other end having a partial, 3 foot or so high wall for the plumbing. How do I turn that partial wall into a wall that goes to the ceiling? I wondered about what if there is not any stud in the ceiling that is directly in line with where the wall would go.
