Toping Compound for texture....before or after drywall primer?

Topping compound........is it a thinner version of regular compound? Does it come premixed or powder?

Can I use it after I prime my ceiling with drywall primer?
Or do I have to do the texture first and then prime?

I would rather do the primer first and then the texture, as I don't think I would be able to do it good enough for the grey not to show through.

I tried a product by Behr, that was suppose to give me a heavy texture, it has some little sand particles in it, and I found it REALLY thick, and very difficult to put on, with even the proper roller.

So I thought I would try the regular compound instead.

Thanks very much......so many questions..........

You can prime the ceiling first, and then texture. The one difference is that it will take a little longer to dry.

FWIW: We add (mix) flat white ceiling paint to our texture-mixture, and that eliminates the need to paint the ceiling after you texture it.

Are you trying roll on products? I would rent a proper spray on hopper and like Atlantic said, mix a little ceiling paint in it to give the finished product more hardness.

I did try a roll on product from Behr, which was a total disaster for me, as it was way too thick, for even the specified roller.

I am going to use regular compound, and roll it on and then texture it by hand using something that I haven't thought of yet......

I don't want to use a sprayer as it will make too much of a mess.

The first ceiling textures were done by hand. My parents 1960 house looked like it was worked with a big sponge. I bet you could apply the compund with a wide trowel and work it with a big wet sponge. Maybe there's some old timers that remember the technique?

I have already tried the sea sponge on a scrap piece of drywall, and it looks pretty good. I think I may go with that.

I was also thinking, instead of trowelling it on the ceiling, or rolling it with a paint roller, I thought, I would prime it, and then dip the sponge into the compound and then dab it on the ceiling, until I complete the whole thing.

I think that may work.

Thanks for your help.
