A tiled Kitchen Island Counter with 10" - 12" projection. Tile Prep. Know How.

We are getting ready to finish our Kitchen Tiling and need to lay some backer material for my 4"x4" white tile. We have a chair rail detail for the edge and need to build up a base 1 1/2" thick.

I have thought about pouring a mini slab on site for the Island that will have a 10"-12" projection. And perhaps Green EBoard (3 ply) every where else...

Is this the best way? Will 1 1/2" of concrete be as strong as say a 3/4" slab of granite?

I have much to learn as this will be my first tile kitchen counter project - ever!!!!
