I just joined this place, which seems to be a wonderful resource.
I am about to finish the garage as a shop. I can get my hands on 5/16 T&G paneling pretty cheap, and I wonder if I could put it on part of two walls, on the corner where I will have the woodworker bench. The studs are bare, 16" OC. Is this material too thin to apply direct over the studs?
My first concern is if this material without sheetrock behind will have enough rigidity.. is not like it is 3/4" T&G.
As for the installation, are you talking plain brown paper of roofing paper? I assume the insulation paper will be on the surface. I am still thinking about the insulation. The walls have 2x4s but the bottom plate is 2x6, so I was thinking on glue/finish-nailing 6" pieces of 1/5" ply every 16" or so and then 2x2 nailed on top thru the ply into the stud. That would allow for R21 which here in Minnesota would help. I do not know if 16" spacing for the ply spacers is enough, or could I go to 20" or 24". The more space, the better thermal separation. Am I in the right track?
