Thick leveling mortar bed OK for concrete block stem wall?

Im building a small shed. Id like to build a two concrete block tall stem wall. Ive poured the footing but unfortunately its not level. At its worst, it would need about 5 inches of a mortar bed to level it out.

Is this within spec for mortar? I will be reinforcing the mortar bed and above course with wire weld mesh and with vertical rebar already set in the footer

Thanks in advance for your advice

I can't imagine good concrete having any problems from the loads of a small shed, myself. I'd pour it and go. How in the heck did you miss by 5"?

I really don't want to mess with setting up forms so Im going with blocks

I originally intended to do a poured wall so I was not careful with the level of the footing, figured it would sort itself out in the pour and Id make sure the forms were level. Ended up being a bonehead move, I have plenty of those

I had a similar thing happen (not 5" though) and had a hellish time getting the blocks level and true.
I would advise you to pour a concrete leveling course on top of your footing, then lay your blocks on this!

The good news is you made a mistake on a not so critical project.

I agree with Wildie and pour a level bed. It will be challenging to say the least to build up a mortar joint that thick. The slump and weight of the block, along with the laws of gravity will test your patience.

You could also cut the block with a gas powered masonry saw and taper them.

Thanks for the replies

Maybe I need to overcome my fear of forms and just do it. If I have to pour more to level it I really might as well just pour the wall

Any tips? I plowed through library books but found them unhelpful; most explained the form process for large basement walls
