thermal insulation under concrete

i am lowering my basement and someone told me that it would be a good idea to set some foam thermo insulation on top of the dirt or gravel before laying concrete. is this truly the case ? if so, what kind should i get ?

thx,

- a

Get the kind rated for under slab, either the Owens Corning Foamular 250 or the Blue Dow foam. Lowes has the Dow board, and Menards has the Owens Corning. For what it's worth, while your at it...I would add a 6 MIL vapor barrier under the foam, it virtually eliminates the moisture migration through the slab.

Have you though about laying radiant heat pipes...even if you don't hook the manifold up now...it would be ready if you wanted it later.

We have a company locally that will spray foam on grade, 1 inch, for an R7 value and is also a vapor isolation. $1.20 a sq/ft installed.

Is that uniform enough to pour a floor over? Sounds interesting...do you have any pictures?

When I had the crawl space rat slab poured, I put down 2" polyisocyanurate board down. I called the manufacturer and they said to put plastic on both sides of the foam. This product had foil on both sides.
