Texturing Stucco

I wonder if anyone on here is familiar with the texture in the photo and can give any tips on matching. I'm repairing a section of stucco below the patio sliding door and I want the texture to match the existing texture of the house which is what is in the photo.

I recently did another repair and I also wanted a match so after the top coat I dipped a masonry broom in the stucco and used to to create blobs like in the photo - the problem was when I tried to knock it down with a trowel it kept crumbling off. In the end I used bigger blobs to be able to knock it down - the finish is a close match but not identical to the original. I would like to get the finish to look closer to the original.
