Hello,
I am thinking about installing tounge and groove pine paneling on my ceilings which are stucco. I would like to know how to go about this with out removing the stucco. I feel the stucco will not allow the boards to sit flush. I was thinking that I could install particle board (or something) on the ceilng first. Then nail the boards over that. Let me know if anyone has any advice or experience with this.
By 'stucco', do you really mean popcorn texture? Or is it the typical trowled texture?
I would avoid attaching particle board...you would be adding a lot of weight....and unless your really careful about how you attach it....by the time you add the T&G....I would be concerned about fastners holding it.
I would attach directly to the ceiling. I'm assuming your going to use 3/4" thick wood....it has enough stiffness that it will smooth out any bumps. To be sure...take a drywall sanding block and run it over the entire ceiling to remove any high spots..
Also....make sure you use long enough nails....figure the T&G is 3/4"....your ceiling drywall is at least 5/8" + texture (assume 3/4" total). You want a min of 1" penatration into the ceiling joist....so your looking at a 2 1/2" finishing nail.
Thank you for the information.
It is the trowled texture, not popcorn. I thought it may be heavy but I am trying to avoiding sanding because it will be a huge mess. If the 3/4" thickness will work better than I will use that.
