Hello all...
Heres the project; removing garage door, framing in a window and entry door then stuccoing the exterior to match rest of house.
Framing out the opening with 2x6's then 1/2 plywood.
I have no problems with the framing, know very little about stucco.
Ive read when doing stucco work its three steps; scratch, brown then finish... what does that mean ?
Heres how its layed out in my head from the reading ive done.
After plywood is up you do tar-paper, lath, wire then stucco - which brings these questions.
- How thick do the lath strips need to be ?
- As for the scratch/base coat how thick does it need to be and what does it consist of, concrete-moter-mix-??
- Same question for the "brown" coat.
Ive read the most important step with the brown coat is to let it dry for a few days while hosing it down.
The opening will be around 7x9 with a window and 36" door, the location of the house is in the middle of NY.
This is a project which i would like to start in the next few weeks so its gonna be hot and the sun will be hitting that side of the house for a good part of the day.
I work second shift so i can "water" the brown coat when i get home at night (12:30am) and during the day before i head off to work (2:30pm).
If needed, i can hang a tarp off the side of the house to try and provide shade.
So the main questions are, what does the scratch and brown coats consists of and how thick do they need to be ?
Thanks for any help.
Ohh.. if anyone responds to this and use abbreviations can you please also state what they mean

thanks
