strapping in prep for vinyl siding

Hello,

I have read that a lot of water gets behind vinyl siding. I am in the process of strapping over exterior insulation. I am wondering if I should be applying something to the strapping in order to protect the wood from the water.

If so what would be my best option...primer, paint (both), stain, or some other product?

Thanks,
Mike

vinyl siding should not be installed over open strapping,it needs a continuous flat surface beneath it,which can be wood sheathing or foam
