Storm Window recommendation

We have decided to keep the historic, beautiful, drafty, persnickety double hung windows in our 205 YO farmhouse. Currently we have old Sears-style AL triple sash storm windows that rattle, leak, and well, look AWFUL.

Has anyone used or have experience with any of the nicer storm windows on the market? Do you like any manufacturers? What does butt-construction expander window mean, and does it matter? Any ideas about ballpark prices?

If I could only remember to THINK about what I was doing before I did it.

leah - i have the exact same issue. i'll follow this post looking for your solution. please post pictures before & after!

ps. i was thinking of making the storms myself. the wood frames from a carpenter (see post above) or you can do yourself if you have skill. then i would use solar rated plexiglass or perhaps lexan. just an idea. trying to keep costs down while making them look nice & have good strong protection.
