Stone counter fabrication

I've seen a few ways stone counters are fabricated, more specifically how the plywood is backed on it...

1) 2 inch plywood strips around the edge used to screw the counters to the cabinets

2) Fully backed by plywood through out

Obviously option 1 is not as strong, but was wondering how big a difference it makes...

If you are ready to spring big $$ for stone countertops, go with solid 5/8" or 3/4" plywood of a good grade for substrait. It will be stronger, gives lateral support to the cabinets, makes appliance and fixture installation easier. Strips would be a cheap out.
