steel or vinyl siding..Whats better?
I have a question we are having trouble with, can anyone help please???House is in the 60's siding is very thick horizontal steel,)NOT SEEMLESS)we are replacing it due to hail damages(thanks to mn weather). We dont know if we should stay with steel(NOT SEEMLESS) or switch to vinyl...... So far we have had no leaking in our basement,Ive read that vinyl can cause leaking into basements? Also my "contractor" was saying something about an " accordion" type of backing that will smoth out the look because its going over wood shingles. I dont know what he's talking about with that either. He didnt mention that vyteck stuff either. My question is, does the steel siding(again not the seemless stuff, just regular) keep the rain out? I know that the vinyl doesnt?

both types seamless or not work the same at ''keeping the rain out'' meaning they both leak around any penetrations such as windows and doors. If done properly this leaking is drained out the same way with both products. The accordion foam your contractor is using is to help create a flat plane over your wood shakes

Why wouldn't you have it stripped to the sheathing?
It's a good idea to see if there has been any water damage over the years. Also a good time to add insulation if needed (blown in), replace windows if needed
Last 3 houses I have worked on removing all the siding has revealed ants, termites, bees or some other pest that made a home under the layers of siding

Thanks for the speedy reply.. does the accordion stuff need the vytec also??? And we will replace windows if we go the vinyl route, We are doing the roof too. Only $15,000 budget, so I dont think we can afford the stripping of the shingles too...funny the contracter didnt mention this option to us anyway

the foam will help if you strip the house to even out any iregularity in the wall and it makes a nice base for vinyl siding.
i would tyvek over the foam

I agree with this. At least someone has done some siding work. But must be a small house to do windows, siding and roofing for that budget.

You really need to strip the shakes first. This is the right way to do it. It will allow you to inspect your house for water damage and reinstall proper flashing and housewrap. Spend the money to do it right. I would go with steel rather than vinyl because you will get a lot more return on your investment. I'm sure you'll pay a lot more for steel but the steel is much better.

Ripping the old stuff off is the easiest part
I'm was even able to bundle them & the Town takes them
Not all at once - but I'm only residing one side of the house at a time

yes stripping the old siding down to the sheathing is the best way to go.
That being said,i would bet that atleast 80 percent of resides done are over the existing siding

"stripping" sounds good,...but I think we'll have to stay in the "80%".
