Steel Posts for Screen Porch

Need advice.

I am building an 18x18 screen porch. Foundation is 4' high using brick veneer and 8" block. A floating concrete floor with appropriate piers and steel lintels used.

I want to support the roof using steel 4" diameter posts from the footing to the rafter beams. Building code department said i don't need but I have seen porches like this fail due to uplift or shear. There will be no shear wall.

Then an 8" round tuscan style column will slip over the steel posts. These columns have adequate load bearing capacity but I want to use steel attached to footing to withstand wind load. The problem is that center line of the steel column must be about 7" from the outside of the brick. In order to match posts on the remainder of the house the posts should be about 5.25" from the outside of the brick. The brick mason will pore concrete abound the posts. The posts will be held in place using rebar and concrete poured into the posts. 24" concrete block will be used in the corner for this. The steel posts will be hot dipped galvanized after all welding is completed. Any one have a recommendation? I would like for the column to be nearer the side of the brick foundation.

After reading your question, I'm not sure what is preventing you from moving the post 1.75"! Is there some design element in the roof structure that prevents it? Is it the base size of the tuscan column? Just not sure of the obstacle.

You are probably right. Since posting this 3.5" steel posts will be attached to the concrete footing. The the brick veneer laid as close as practical to the post. Looks like this is all that can be done.
