steel I beam


can a 8"x 4" 1/4" span 22'?

Sure you just can't put anything on it.

The deflection by the sounds of what you described as an W8 x 15 spanning 22' under it own weight would not be acceptable, let alone putting any load on it.

Beam sizing is typically left to the pro's, find one pay them to design a support system at least that way you will not have to worry about your structure collapsing.

Ditto on what Jack said.....and that beam will not span that distance safely.....

I built a garage about 3 years ago.....I was cosindering using a steel beam to span 20'....it would have needed to be a 6x10 3/8" thick.

Believe it or not....PSL might be a better choice...but you need to get engineering calcs on it.....

Nice thing about PSL's....a lot eaiser to cut and drive nails into than steel beam....
