starter strip for vinyl

starter strip for vinyl siding - should just click in, correct?

When it appears to be in, I go to put the nail in, and it pops out - every time!

Don't know if it's my technique, the metal starter strip, or what...

If the starter strip is aluminum or steel - the siding will not "click"/snap in.
It will "snap" in if the starter strip is vinyl.
If you're going to use metal starter strip - you have to hold the first panel into the starter -
knee, foot, something - while you nail it.
Better - have someone hold the panel up.

Ditto on what Ross said. One additional thing I do is measure the total height of the panel and measure up from the bottom of the starter strip and snap a chalkline. Just a way to make sure you pull the first row up all the way and get off to a straight start. I also pull the panel up snug, still nailing in the middle of the slot. The bottom panel will not necessarily slide side to side as easy as the ones above it. Not a problem. I do prefer steel starter strip over the aluminum or vinyl starters. It is much more ridgid and helps get off to a good start.
