Staining treads, painting risers

I'm thinking of staining our basement stairs instead of installing carpeting. The treads appear to be a stainable grade of wood, but the risers are not. I would like to use wood with a smoother finish for the risers also. What do people normally do to correct this? Should I cover them with veneer, cut new risers from birch plywood?

use a thin bead of construction adhesive and a couple small finish nails. fill nail holes then touch up paint.

Better off with 1/4" birch ply. Not only does the face not damage as easily as laun, it paints much better since it does not have the big open grain pattern of the laun.

They're oak treads I imagine, why not use some 1/4" oak plywood to cover the risers so you can stain everything!
