stained glass ceiling help needed

this person i met through a craigslist ad (for a free ceiling fan i was actually fast enough to get!) living nearby is thinking of a unique ceiling. he took out this fan and put in a dome light because of the height. (7')
he (or his wife) glued some small pieces (1/2" to around 1") of stained glass in a pattern over part of the glass. it looked pretty nice, but now he has another idea. he says he has boxes of the glass in his basement and wants to glue the whole living room ceiling with a huge mosaic pattern or picture. my concern is the weight and what type of glue, if any is going to work for this? not sure, but i think he just did hotglue on the cover.? maybe silicone, but it was clear. also.... it looked kinda like popcorn, or at least a texture, i didn't look that close. anyone?

and no, it ain't me, i like my wood ceilings to avoid taping and muddin'! lol

WHAT?!?!?! You with that handy dandy supper spiffy drywall lift....tell me its not so!!!!!!!

As for the question at hand...not a clue...but I would think that would be very heavy...don't think I'd trust drywall alone...

??? there's 5/8" drywall up there! i just put the birch and walnut over it! that's why i invented/built the lift! hehehehe
My $40 (300 sq. ft.) Homemade Birch/Walnut Ceiling
but to the qah... hmmm, perhaps make smaller squares (maybe 2'x2') of say 1/8" brown hardboard with screwholes strategically placed to hit studs, avoid glass over those holes and then PL adhesive AND screws would be safe enough, i should think. i can't think of any superfast setting glue that would hold them up there otherwise if he just wants to start gluing them to existing surface.

He'll need a light source behind the glass to show the colors won't he?

There is an adhesive that is strong enough to hold those pieces to whatever surface he chooses. It's like a double-sided tape, but thicker, much stronger and permanent.

It sounds like a cool project.

i don't think that's what he meant, no light behind it, just to glue it up like a tile, but glass. i don't know if he intends to caulk between or what. i'm just hoping to pass along a few ideas for him to consider before he starts gluing with superglue! lol
my concern is gravity and trying to get each tiny piece to stay in place until dry/set.

That will be a true pain in the neck putting up 1/2" to 1" pieces on a ceiling. It could look nice though.
