spacing on gate pickets

what is the code?

Where re you located? That makes a difference.

Here there is no code for a gate that is on the ground, a deck gate or a stair case gate is different.

I believe the code is 4" but code or no code for once let common sense prevail and place them no farther apart than 4" so a small child has no chance of injury or worse. If it were my project I'd probably go with 3-1/2" spacing.

The Moon rises from the East, while the Lion sleeps.

The code here is 4 inches, small enough so a baby cannot crawl through

mae-ling 09-20-2012 10:15 AM

Kevin - That is for stair railings/gates. Not for yard Gates as I understand it.

Usually for fences, it is one board spacing, so that it appears consistent when looking at it. More for visual than anything else.

You're right, Mae-Ling, it is for railings, anywhere there is a drop of 2 ft or more. I've not heard of a building code requirement for a gate where there is no fall hazard - it could be 1 inch or 3 ft, depending on how you want it to look.
