Sound proof door

We have just rented out our basement suite and have discovered that the door upstairs that leads down to the suit is crap and allows alot of noise to come through, we can hear everything they say. This door is not going to be used as we do not need to go down and they do not need to come up. There are large gaps under the door and it is hollow. Would it be best to replace it with a nice solid fire door, I assume this would help with the noise transfer. Our other idea is to add a door at the bottom of the stairs in their suite.

I think your best course of action would be to install a solid core door or an insulated door. Incorporate a threshold to seal off the underside as well. Bear in mind that the walls also transmit a great deal of sound, so it may not completely mitigate the issue, but is sounds like it will help.

I'd avoid the addition of another door, unless there is a 36" landing at the bottom of the stairs...For safety's sake.

Thanks for the advice, I too would rather just replace the door than add another downstairs. Would my best choice of door just be an exterior entry door as I guess these are solid?

If you want a wood door, just go for a solid core interior door. If you want a steel insulated door, then you'll have to get an exterior door.

If you choose an interior door, you can add an aftermarket threshold or door sweep in a number of different configurations.

Solid core wood door it i then with a new door sweep and some weather stripping to help reduce the sound.

I think that's the best you can do without tearing into walls and floors!

Well I will replace the door and if I can still hear too much I can always cover the other side of the door with a large blanket as its not getting used, or maybe even some proper sound proofing material.
