sound insulation

Is Sound Control insulation the same as standard batts, just without the paper? I did not think so, but a sales guy told me that recently. I am doing a small remodel and want to look at options to insulate the mech closet for sound.

Thanks

Fiberglass in realy not very good for sound.

If you can get rock wool or similar batts (various brand names), this is much better.

Fiberglass will absorb sound but you have to buy it in the form of pressed panels. Most sound baffles you see in large auditoriums are made of this. It comes in sheets from 1" to 2" thick. You have to cover it with some sort of cloth though. It's expensive too.

Fibreglass thermal insulation is NOT the same as sound attenuation insulation. Sound dampening insulation does a better job, but is far from soundproof.

sound insulation

My experience has been that adding sound attenuation batts in a residential situation is basically ineffective unless measures are taken in the application of wallboard to reduce sound as well (resilient channel, offset studs, etc).
